My take on the book:
Avanthika Krishnan has just regained consciousness after an accident and realizes she is left with retrograde amnesia, a condition that has erased all her past memories. An investigative journalist who bravely took up risky assignments, Avanthika struggles to recognize and recollect the people closest to her. Before she can find the reason for her accident or learn about her past, her childhood best friend, Marvin, is shot outside his residence.
Around the same time, an alarmingly high number of young women are being hospitalized with a rapidly progressing, almost violent form of acute appendicitis. As Avanthika starts digging deeper into the circumstances that led to her accident, there are more deaths and murder attempts. Whether Avanthika will be able to crack this mystery while also finding out about her past forms the rest of the story.
This is a psychological and medical thriller involving a protagonist who restarts her life again with a mind that is like a clean slate, devoid of any prior memories. The author reveals clues one after the other, careful to keep the suspense till the end, and succeeds in it. The reader will suspect the three men who were part of Avanthika’s life — her childhood best friend Marvin, her ex-boyfriend Dr. Shankar, and her estranged husband Ravi.
The novel’s exploration of modern pharmaceutical exploitation and the vulnerability of ordinary patients is particularly commendable and timely. However, while the suspense is well-maintained, the climax suffers slightly from over-explaining details that could have been left tighter. Additionally, a few plot threads feel overly convenient, especially regarding how easily certain crimes evade police detection.
If the lack of logic in few sequences can be ignored, and if you enjoy medical thrillers, this fast, twisty read will entertain you.
