Beyond #MeToo : Ushering Women’s Era or Just Noise? by Tanushree Ghosh

My take on the book:

Most of us have heard of or read about the hashtag #Metoo, how and when it started overseas and India’s own version of it when actor and former Miss India Tanushree Dutta shared her story; then followed by many other women opening up about their own stories of sexual harassment, mostly in professional space.

While the supposed “noise” around the topic seems to have died down, have we wondered what happened after the trending of the hashtag on social media? Did it lead to something significant as a solution for those who narrated their stories, other than support on these social media platforms from other such victims? If you wanted to know what happened next, then Beyond #Metoo by Tanushree Ghosh is the perfect read.

The author highlights how the hashtag had been a major turning point for adding momentum to the fight for women’s rights and how it is essential to move beyond the hashtag and address the underlying causes of gender inequality. The book is well-researched and is insightful as the author draws on a wide range of sources, including personal interviews, academic studies, and news reports.

The author discusses the backlash against the movement, as well as the challenges of holding perpetrators accountable. She also explains why the movement needs to be more inclusive of women from all walks of life. One of the strengths of the book is the author’s ability to balance different perspectives on the #MeToo movement as she acknowledges the movement’s shortcomings; and that it is important to address the root causes of gender inequality, such as poverty, racism, and homophobia.

The author also provides a global perspective on the #MeToo movement, discussing its impact in different countries around the world. Beyond narrating the major incidents that happened around this movement, the book also works as a call for action, as the author urges readers to continue the fight for gender equality.

Overall, the book offers a nuanced and thought-provoking analysis of the #MeToo movement. The authors insights are valuable for anyone seeking to understand the challenges and opportunities presented by this movement.
