My take on this book:
When the Soul Heals by Pulkit Sharma deals with the void in information provided by psychoanalysis, which generally is uni-dimensional. Psychologists also generally do not take into consideration about conscious, subconscious and unconscious states of mind. As the author who is a practicing counselor points out, psychological issues should not be treated stand alone and need to have spirituality added to help individuals completely recover from their ailments. The author covers a wide array of topics including Stress, Anger, Grief, Anxiety, Depression, Beauty Obsessions, Addictions and Caregiver burden.
The book is well organized with each chapter dedicated to each of these topics, citing a real-life example and then explaining the symptoms, reasons leading to such situations, how they are treated by doctors. However, the highlight is the spiritual path taken for each issue and how in addition to medication, this helped the individual cope. The author also explains at the end of each chapter how following this regime helped the person and brought a positive change in their life.
The book also clarifies that spirituality should not be misunderstood as a certain religion by adding quotes from different faiths at the start of each chapter. There are also mentions of gurus and spiritual practitioners for each topic to help provide guidance to the reader. I loved how the author explained even complex concepts in simple and easy to understand words, that the book is apt even for beginners. For example, any ordinary reader may not realize how a common emotion like anger can have far serious implications when it goes out of control, but the author even explains the types of anger that are seen in the simplest possible way.
If you have been through any of the above-mentioned issues or have a family member or friend going through them or just curious to understand about these mental health conditions and how spirituality can help, this book is a must read.
