Spreading Joy: How Joyalukkas Became the World’s Favourite Jeweller — Thomas Scaria and Nidhi Jain
My take on the book:
Spreading Joy is biography of one of the World’s most favorite jeweller, Joy Alukkas. Hailing from Thrissur in Kerala, born as one of the fifteen children of Puthussery Alukka Joseph Varghese, Joy was never considered the one who will inherit his father’s business sense. The book traces his journey from this small town to Dubai and beyond, as his business spanned multiple countries across decades, while facing cultural and language barriers, and how he built a global chain of over 160 stores in 11 countries.
The book starts from the time Joy was a kid, reiterating how the family values and discipline taught by his parents helped shape his adult life. Joy started working in his family’s jewellery store, but dreamed of creating something bigger. Joy did not just grow his business; he transformed the gold retail landscape. He introduced innovations like karatmeters, transparent billing software, and fixed gold pricing, fostering trust and customer satisfaction.
Joyalukkas’ success extends beyond gold. The brand embraces diverse businesses like forex exchange (Joyalukkas Exchange) and textiles (Jolly Silks), highlighting Joy’s ambitious spirit and diversification strategy. The book’s title reflects Joy’s core belief — business is not just about profit, but creating happiness for stakeholders: customers, employees, and communities. His philanthropic initiatives exemplify this philosophy. The book highlights Joy’s philanthropic endeavors and commitment to social responsibility.
Overall, Spreading Joy is an inspiring story of an individual’s vision, determination, and impact on the global jewellery industry. The book offers valuable insights for anyone interested in business, leadership, and creating a positive impact on the world.
