My take on the book:

Joshua was always inspired by the stories that his grandfather narrated to him in his childhood; the stories of heroes, who would rise to the occasion beyond their capabilities, overcoming their weaknesses. But trouble strikes when Josh takes this idea of heroism seriously, pushing himself and people around him into risky situations. One such incident changes Josh forever, mellowing him to an extent he refuses to stand up when his wife Susan decides to handle a nasty situation.

Josh also gave up his dream to become a writer on his father’s advice and instead keeps himself busy in a corporate job. As the pandemic hit the country and Josh’s organization in March 2020, the situation at work gets tough with pressure for deadlines and layoffs mounts. Will Josh be able to standup for his wife and his colleagues forms the rest of the story.

The corporate politics and jargon are perfectly used by the author. Unlike what the name suggests, it is not just a love story but also touches on friendship, work relationships and family emotions. The onset of pandemic and how it affected people’s life is nicely weaved into the narrative. Josh’s dilemma while facing situations like his past are well handled by the author.

The story of David narrated by Josh’s grandfather feels like a good part of the story but gets overwhelming when David’s story is stretched taking major chunk of the story in second half. The author has taken a good concept of childhood trauma haunting and disrupting adult life, which could have been better executed as parts of climax turn filmy, hence the story loses the charm built so far.

Pick this one for a good one time read for the message it delivers about real-life heroes.

My rating:
